At Hodge Clough Primary reading is a high priority, it is at the heart of what we do and weaves into all parts of our curriculum.
We provide the opportunity for our children to develop their reading skills across the curriculum; reading a broad range of materials to support their subject knowledge.
We understand at Hodge Clough that reading is a passport to the world.
By providing a range of texts opens children up to ideas, experiences, places and times they might never otherwise experience in real life. We aim for all our pupils to develop a love for reading and want to read for pleasure.
Phonics & Early Reading
At Hodge Clough we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme to ensure our children get off to a flying start with their reading. Our children learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter(s) using simple picture prompts, learn to orally blend with Fred the Frog leading to blending sounds in order to read words. Children read lively stories featuring words they have learned and show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.
Our Reception classes follow RWI ‘talk through stories’ to ensure all children at Hodge Clough are read to and exposed to a variety of books and therefor a wide range of vocabulary and support a wider understanding of language.
KS2
Once our children are equipped with the skills and tools needed to decode words and have built fluency and accuracy when reading, children progress to specific comprehension skills. Our KS2 classes have daily, whole class reading sessions using high quality texts.
Each child takes home a reding book matched to their phonic/reading ability and a book of their choice from our class library to share at home.
