History at HCP
Children at Hodge Clough Primary School learn to think critically, ask questions and use artefacts and historical information to develop understanding, perspective and judgement.
Our children are given opportunities to build upon their prior learning, which enables them to extend their understanding of historical periods of time and make comparisons and connections between different time periods. Our history topics have been chosen to allow children to develop their knowledge and understanding of both the history of our local area and the wider world.
To be a good historian, you have to act as a detective.
Good historians are curious and inquisitive. They search for clues about the past and put them together to find out what happened. They look at a variety of sources and know which questions to ask to deepen their knowledge and understanding.
By the end of Reception children will be able to:
- Talk about their personal history
- Understand some key historical events beyond living memory
By the end of Key Stage 1 children will be able to:
- talk about changes within living memory.
- share facts about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally
- discuss the lives of significant people in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.
- identify some significant historical events, people and places in their own locality.
By the end of Key Stage 2 children will be able to:
- show a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history
- Note connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms.
- Devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference, and significance.
- Construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information.
