Our Classroom Routines
Every morning once the children have arrived and settled in we do the register and begin our day. Our carpet times give us the opportunity to focus on some of the prime areas of learning, in particular developing speaking and listening skills and also furthering personal social and emotional development. The children also work in smaller groups guided by an adult to complete phonics and maths activities daily. We also follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme, consisting of weekly sessions which help our Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) - this is always very exciting as it means we have a visit from Jigsaw Jenie!
In addition, throughout the course of the week the children will also have the opportunity to develop their gross and fine motor skills through P.E. and Dough Disco and explore expressive arts and design through music. They also practice mindfulness during ‘Calm Me’ time as part of their weekly Jigsaw sessions.
The Nursery classroom provides a high quality continuous provision, both indoors and outside, in which everything is carefully planned for. Children are able to explore this as they wish throughout the day, developing their characteristics of learning as they begin to apply their learning in different contexts. The continuous provision is primarily linked to our current topic, however we enjoy following the children’s interests and adapt as needed. Alongside the children’s opportunity to freely explore and investigate they will also work with an adult on focused tasks, usually working in small groups.
In Nursery we do PE weekly but there is no requirement for children to get changed so they do not require a PE kit.
Just a gentle reminder to double check your child's name is visible in all items of clothing. This will avoid them being misplaced. Please check them throughout the year as unfortunately they often wash out over time.
Newsletter
Class newsletters are sent home half-termly. These provide an overview of what your child will be learning during the half term, as well as highlighting any important dates for your diary.

How can I help?
We really value the support given from parents and believe that a strong home-school partnership provides children with a fantastic opportunity to continually develop and consolidate their learning. Below are some ideas of how you can help - if you need any support or further information, please do not hesitate to speak with Mrs Mills or a member of the nursery staff.

Talking at home
In Nursery, and across school, we are working really hard on developing and extending children's vocabulary and would encourage this at home too. Some ideas of how you can support this are listed below:
- Providing a narrative as you play with your child, commenting on what is happening
- Encourage your child to talk, trying to avoid "closed" questions (limited opportunities for answering) and instead try to use "open" questions such as "why' and "how"
- Repeat back what your child has said to you and try to model it as a full sentence
Reading at home
We love reading in Nursery and share stories together many times a day, whether it be during whole class storytime, small group shared reading, 1:1 reading with an adult or choosing to access books independently.
You are able to help at home by providing lots of opportunities. Some ideas are listed below
- Singing nursery rhymes. These also provide fantastic opportunities to explore new vocabulary
- Providing lots of opportunities to hear and share stories together. We will also send books home for you to share together.
- Remember repetition is good. Children love to learn repeated refrains which they will then use in their play.
- Explore environmental print together, such as familiar logos or signs. This will encourage your child to make links and recognise that print carries meaning.
Please encourage your child to dress as independently as possible, practicing buttons and zips at any opportunity. This includes putting on and fastening a coat.
In preparation for Nursery please continue to practice self-care skills with your child as there is an expectation that children are able to use the toilet independently when joining us.
We would ask that each child brings a bag of spare clothing to be left in school on their peg in case of toileting accidents.
