Welcome to Year 1 2025/26

Year 1 at Hodge Clough is a special time where curiosity, imagination, and confidence bloom. It’s the bridge between play-based learning and more structured exploration, filled with exciting discoveries in reading, writing, maths, and the world around us.

Our children will build strong foundations in key skills while developing independence, creativity, and a love for learning.  We believe every child will be nurtured, challenged, and celebrated—setting the stage for a successful journey through school and beyond.

Year 1 Staff

Class Teachers: Miss Wood and Mrs Rattenbury
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Ball, Miss Schofield, Miss Rathmill and Miss Taylor
PPA cover: Miss Taylor and Miss McGary

We will be exploring the countries of the UK. We will be using maps to locate places across the UK and learning about the four compass points. We will also be deepening our understanding of the four seasons and exploring weather patterns in both the UK and our local area. We will be exploring the features of different animal groups and learning how to identify and classify animals. We will also be developing our knowledge of the human body by exploring body parts and our five senses.

Through our reading of Hermelin, we will be developing our writing skills by creating detective-style story sentences and letter sentences. This work will help us practise using descriptive language, sentence structure, and writing for different purposes.

While reading Where the Wild Things Are, we will be writing story sentences and information sentences linked to the text. This will support our understanding of storytelling, characters, and settings, while also helping us learn how to share facts clearly through our writing. Together, these texts will help strengthen both our creative and informative writing skills.
