Hodge Clough Primary School - Year 4 Information

Our Classroom Routines

We arrive in class each morning at 8:45am, ready for the register. Learning begins promptly at 8:55am. Playtime takes place at 11:00am, and lunch runs from 12:45pm to 1:45pm. The school day finishes at 3:15pm.

We teach Maths and English every day, alongside dedicated spelling sessions during the week. Children also practise letter formation and handwriting joins daily to develop confident, fluent writing.

In Maths, we follow the White Rose approach. Further information about this and other areas of the curriculum can be found on the Curriculum pages in the main menu. Each child also has online access to Times Tables Rock Stars, where they can practise their times tables at home.

Our PE day is Friday, and children should come to school dressed in their PE kits on this day. PE lessons are delivered by dance teacher, Lauren.

Every Wednesday, we hold our Values Assembly, where families are warmly invited to celebrate their child’s achievements as awards are presented. Parents and carers will be notified in advance via the weekly school newsletter and text message - please ensure your contact details are kept up to date.

Newsletters

Class newsletters are sent home half-termly. These provide an overview of what your child will be learning during the half term, as well as highlighting any important dates for your diary.

Times Tables

We will be practising our times tables every day in school, and we would really appreciate your support with this at home. By the end of Year 4, children are expected to be able to recall all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12.
A times tables test will take place every Friday.

Each child has a login for Times Tables Rock Stars, where they can practise their times tables through fun, interactive games and earn tables coins as rewards.

Spellings

In school, children are given 15 spelling words every two weeks. These may include key words that children are expected to spell correctly by the end of Year 4, as well as words that follow specific spelling rules. We complete a range of activities in school to support spelling development.

Spellings are issued at the start of each half term, and a fortnightly spelling check takes place every Friday. Families are welcome to practise these spellings at home to further support learning.

Reading

Reading diaries are checked regularly, and children are expected to read at home at least three times per week. We encourage you to read with your child and record each session in their diary, including the book title, pages read, and a brief comment on how they read.

Reading books and diaries should be brought into school every day. Reading books will be changed on Fridays.

Essential learning in Year 4

At Hodge Clough Primary, pupils are assessed against end-of-year age-related expectations in maths and English. These expectations, in line with the National Curriculum, set out the minimum requirements a learner must meet in order to ensure continued progress throughout the year, in line with age expected standards

The New Curriculum places a strong emphasis on ensuring children develop a broad understanding of the concepts and skills they learn. The application of skills and understanding across a wide range of curriculum areas is key. Rather than moving ‘up’ the stages, the focus is on moving ‘outwards’ developing a deeper understanding.,
