Welcome to Year 5 2026/27
Year 5 is such a special stage in your child’s journey. From exciting projects that spark curiosity, to trips and experiences that bring learning to life, Year 5 is all about growing in confidence, working together, and discovering new talents. With teamwork, creativity, and a strong sense of belonging at the heart of everything we do, children in Year 5 not only build the knowledge and skills they need for the future but also create memories that last a lifetime.

We will be developing our geographical understanding of the world’s oceans and seas. We will be learning to locate and name the five oceans, explore ocean climates and currents, and investigate the wide range of habitats and species that live beneath the surface.
We will also be examining how oceans influence weather and climate, as well as considering the impact of human activity, including pollution and climate change. Through engaging, enquiry-based lessons, we will build key geographical skills while developing a strong sense of environmental responsibility and global awareness.
We will be reading Street Child as our class novel. Alongside this, we will study The Hound of the Baskervilles, using it as inspiration for our writing. From this text, we will be writing a cliffhanger narrative and a formal report, focusing on suspense, structure, and formal language.
Later in the term, we will use The Promise to write a character-focused narrative and a bargain letter, developing our ability to write for different purposes and audiences while strengthening vocabulary and sentence structure.
