Our reading intent at Hodge Clough is to provide our pupils with discrete word-reading skills and comprehension, and to encourage and support our children in their love of books and reading. These two elements weave together to enable our pupils to become life-long readers.
Our Reading curriculum provides children with the skills and tools needed to become a confident reader and therefore have access to the world around them.
Our intent is for our pupils to have:
•Secure phonic knowledge in order to decode words
•Read with fluency, accuracy and expression
•Explain vocabulary used in the text
•Retrieve information and use their inference skills
•Discuss the writer’s choice of words and layout
•Have a rapidly widening repertoire of books they have read and authors they know.
•Children will be able to recommend books and authors to their peers.
•A good awareness and appreciation of different literary genres.
•A passion for and commitment to reading, both for study and for pleasure.
